システムエンジニア（SE）とは、情報システムの職域をあらわす和製英語である。要求定義、設計、構築、運用に従事する職を指す。より狭い意味では、情報システムの開発に携わる者、とりわけ情報システムの設計開発者のうち上級の者を指して言うこともある。（中略）。アメリカ合衆国など英語圏では、システム・エンジニアリング (Systems engineering)という言葉はあるが、技術者にたいしての「システムエンジニア」という呼び名は存在せず、SEはソフトウェアエンジニア（Software Engineer）の事を指す。アメリカ合衆国のソフトウェアエンジニアは、日本で言われるプログラマだけでなくシステムエンジニアの仕事も兼ねているのが一般的である。

だそうだ。ということで、もし、SE という仕事をしているのなら、「仕事は何をしていますか？」と聞かれたら、Software Engineer をしていますと答えた方が日本以外では一般的かもしれない。...と書こうとした。しかし、 Software Engineering は「ソフトウェア工学」なんだよね。

そして、ソフトウェア工学の学位を持っている人って少ない気がするし。博士・修士・学士のどれをとっても。Software engineering - Wikipedia によると

Due to its relative newness as a field of study, formal education in software engineering is often taught as part of a computer science curriculum, and as a result most software engineers hold computer science degrees. The term software engineer is used very liberally in the corporate world. Very few of the practicing software engineers actually hold Engineering degrees from accredited universities. だそうです。要するに、

• ソフトウェア工学はまだ出来て日が浅いから計算機科学（computer science）の分野でソフトウェア工学は教えられたりする。
• そのため、ソフトウェアエンジニアは計算機科学の学位を持っていたりする。
• "software engineer"　という言葉は実業界ではとても自由に使われていて、実際に働いているソフトウェアエンジニアのごく少数しか、ソフトウェア工学の学位を持っていない。
• ACM（米国計算機学会）によると、米国でちゃんとしたソフトウェアエンジニアとして働いている人の大部分は、ソフトウェア工学の学位ではなく、計算機科学の学位を持っている。

と。あー、学位の話をし始めると疲れるので、めんどくさいし、programmer でいいや。私の学位も微妙だし。内容は計算機科学の分野だけど名称はたぶん工学だし。

と書いてある。でもでも、

とも書いてある。programmer は software developer, software engineer, computer scientist, software analyst ではない。これらの職業の人も一般的にプログラミング技術を持ってはいるけれども。
