セキュリティ更新プログラム（KB979683） がインストールできない？ [NT]
Windows XP 用セキュリティ更新プログラム（KB979683） で問題が発生する場合がある模様。
当方で生じた問題は KB979683何度入れれば気が済むんだ？！ | ぽぽろんのパソコンつれづれ日記 で述べられている事と全く同一。
KB979683 を Windows Update（Microsoft Update）にてインストールしたが、何故かまた、Windows Update の対象プログラムとしてリストアップされてしまう。
調べたところ、KB979683 - PC World Forums で解決方法が記載されていた。
Yesterday I downloaded a whole lot of new updates from Microsoft, all of which apparently installed successfully except one coded KB979683, which repeatedly asks to be installed. It's driving me nuts! Has anybody else encountered this annoying item and knows either how to get rid of or fix it?

と回答が寄せられている。リンク先の Microsoft Knowledge Base では次のよう記述されている。
方法 3: Catroot2 フォルダーの名前を変更する
Catroot2 フォルダーの名前を変更した後、プログラムを再度インストールします (Windows XP および Windows Server 2003 のみ)。
注: 実行しているオペレーティング システムが Windows 2000 である場合、この手順は実行しないでください。
Catroot2 フォルダーの名前を変更するには、次の手順を実行します。重要: Catroot フォルダーの名前は変更しないでください。Catroot2 フォルダーは Windows によって自動的に再作成されますが、Catroot フォルダーは名前を変更すると再作成されません。
- [スタート] ボタンをクリックし、[ファイル名を指定して実行] をクリックします。[名前] ボックスに「cmd」と入力し、[OK] をクリックします。
- コマンド プロンプトで以下のコマンドを入力し、各行の最後で Enter キーを押します。
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\System32\CatRoot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
exit- 以下のフォルダーからすべての tmp*.cat ファイルを削除します。
%systemroot%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
ファ イル名が tmp で始まるファイルがこのフォルダーに存在しない場合、ファイルの削除は行わないでください。このフォルダー内の .cat ファイルは、修正プログラムや Service Pack のインストールに必要です。
回答者はこの「Method 3: Rename the Catroot2 folder」を実行するように紹介しているが、Knowledge base には他の方法もあり、方法1、方法2 で解決した場合は方法 3 を実行する必要は無いらしい。
結局、質問者が Microsoft Knowledge Base にある修正方法を試したところ
